So Melbourne grew by 79,000 people and Sydney by 75,600 last year, seems Sydney has closed up the population growth gap on Melbourne.
The difference was about 30,000 a few years ago when Melbourne was growing at about 90,000 a year and Sydney 60,000 a year.
These figures suggests Melbournes growth rate is slowing and Sydneys growth rate is rising !!!!!
At this rate Sydney will be outpacing Melbourne once again in about 1 to 2 years, especially when the new Liberal premier of NSW Barry O'Farrell announces he wants to see more growth in north west and south west Sydney.
He announced on the weekend Sydney's largest land release in more than a decade of over 10,000 new blocks of land at The Ponds in north west Sydney, and with major new infrastructure about to start and more on the planning board for Sydney, this will drive a jobs boom in NSW and even further population growth for Sydney.
Having said all that, Sydney is still a city with half a million more people than Melbourne which is about 2 cities the size of Canberra.
Melbourne may have been flavour of the month last decade as Sydney let it play "catch up" but Sydney is about to enter a whole new era with a new Government, renewed vigour, enthusiasm and energy that will turn the focus back on Australia's biggest city, which some call the New York of Australia.
What was that famous phrase Paul Keating once said, "if you are not living in Sydney you are camping out"

Sydney may have closed the gap the past few years, however, Melbourne is still more affordable (just)!! Hopefully we don't close the gap too quickly - I wouldn't want to see house prices follow the population growth rate trend much longer. It's beyond so many now as it is.
